SUMMARY:The Future of Photo Planning with Wenjie Qiao
DESCRIPTION:Great photographs often begin long before the shutter is pressed. Whether you’re planning a dramatic sunset\, a perfectly aligned moonrise\, or a Milky Way photograph\, knowing where to be and when can make all the difference. Join Darkroomers as we welcome Wenjie Qiao\, creator of the popular PlanIt photography planning app\, for a look at the future of photo planning. \n\n\n\nWenjie will introduce PlanIt Earth\, the next generation of PlanIt’s powerful planning tools. Building on the capabilities of PlanIt Pro\, the new app uses realistic 3D terrain\, satellite imagery\, and a virtual viewfinder to help photographers visualize their compositions before arriving on location. Explore how to anticipate the position of the sun\, moon\, and Milky Way\, evaluate lighting conditions\, and plan precise alignments with landmarks and landscapes. Google Play \n\n\n\nFrom landscape and travel photography to astrophotography and cityscapes\, this presentation will explore how modern planning tools can help photographers make better use of their time in the field. Whether you’re already a PlanIt user or new to photography planning apps\, you’ll discover new possibilities for turning creative ideas into photographs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wenjie Qiao\n\n\n\nWenjie Qiao is the developer behind PlanIt\, a photography planning application designed to help photographers visualize and prepare for complex shooting conditions. His work combines mapping\, astronomy\, terrain modeling\, and photographic calculations into practical tools for photographers. PlanIt has been used by landscape and night photographers to plan everything from Milky Way compositions to rare events such as moonbows and meteor showers. 1x.com \n\n\n\nWith the introduction of PlanIt Earth\, Wenjie continues to expand what photographers can accomplish before heading into the field\, bringing more realistic visualization and advanced planning capabilities to the process of creating photographs.

SUMMARY:October 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will start promptly at 7 pm\, but we’ll open the building at 6 pm for setup and social hour. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for our Monthly Critique Night!\n\n\n\nOur judge for October will be Willie Sakai. \n\n\n\nMembers bring prints for critique on the third Wednesday of each month. Prints accepted by the Judge will hang for up to 2 months in the Photographic Arts Building gallery. \n\n\n\n\nVisitors are welcome\, however\, submitting images for critique is available for members only. If you’d like more information about joining Darkroomers\, please check out our membership page and email us if you have any questions. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Willie Sakai\n\n\n\nA photographer for over 45 years\, Willie Sakai caught the photo bug as a yearbook staff photographer in high school\, developing and printing Kodak Plus-X and Tri-X in a darkroom. In 2005\, he switched to DSLR to capture better photos of his daughter\, who had started competitive dancing at an early age. As volunteer photographers for their daughter’s high school dance team\, Willie and his wife Lois acquired more gear and taught themselves to capture fast-moving subjects in less-than-ideal light. \n\n\n\nAfter their daughter’s high school graduation\, Willie and Lois founded Jade Coast Photography\, specializing in portraiture for dancers\, seniors\, and families. To continue improving his skills\, Willie joined the Professional Photographers of San Diego County (PPSDC)\, where he served as webmaster for five years. \n\n\n\nAlthough a Lightroom user since version 1.0\, participating in PPSDC image competitions forced him to learn Photoshop. These hard-won Photoshop skills led to an interest in digital art\, as well as recent recognition\, including the following: \n\n\n\n\nPPSDC Photographer of the Year (2020\, 2022)\n\n\n\nPPSDC Image of the Year (2020\, 2021)\n\n\n\nPPSDC Photojournalism Photographer of the Year (2022)\n\n\n\nPPSDC Digital Artist of the Year (2020\, 2021\, 2022)\n\n\n\nPPSDC Illustrative Photographer of the Year (2019\, 2020)\n\n\n\nRibbons at the Del Mar Fair’s International Exhibition of Photography\n\n\n\n\nWillie has trained as a Judge by Professional Photographers of California. \n\n\n\nLately\, he can be found chasing after his grandson with a retro-looking Fuji rangefinder\, which digitally simulates analog film looks. The circle is complete – what was old is new again.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Image: A Conversation About Photography
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we are going to try something a little different. We hope you will find it both interesting and inspiring. Afterward\, we’d would love to hear your thoughts–what you enjoyed\, what you did not\, and whether you’would like to see more meetings like this in the future. \n\n\n\nThis is not intended to replace our Member Spotlight presentations or our regular critiques. Instead\, it is an opportunity to explore photography from a different perspective and add another type of program to our schedule. \n\n\n\nThis will be an informal\, interactive group discussion centered around two activities: \n\n\n\n1. Share an Image\n\n\n\nIf you would like to participate\, bring one or two photographs–either printed or in digital form (on your laptop or a flash drive). \n\n\n\nThe photographer may ask specific questions or simply invite discussion. From there\, we will open it up to the group. Comments might include what draws you to the image\, questions it raises\, what could be strengthened\, the story it tells\, the emotions it evokes\, or even the experience of creating it. The conversation will go wherever the image leads us. \n\n\n\nThink of it as something between a traditional critique and a conversation about photography. \n\n\n\n2. Explore Photography Through Others’ Eyes\n\n\n\nI subscribe to an extensive online collection of photographic articles\, essays\, podcasts\, interviews\, and photo books. I will select a few pieces for us to explore together\, and wee will discuss the ideas they present\, the photographs they contain\, and the different perspectives they offer. \n\n\n\nRather than analyzing whether an image is “good” or “bad\,” we will consider why it affects us\, what the photographer may have intended\, and what we each take away from it. \n\n\n\nA Different Way of Looking\n\n\n\nIf you’ve attended one of Bernard Mendoza’s presentations or workshops\, you will have an idea of the spirit We’d like to capture. Bernard approaches photography in a thoughtful\, philosophical way. He emphasizes the art of photography–the story\, meaning\, emotion\, and personal vision behind an image–far more than the technical details. \n\n\n\nWhile technical discussions are certainly welcome if they naturally arise\, we would like our primary focus to be on the artistic side of photography: what makes an image meaningful\, memorable\, or emotionally engaging. \n\n\n\nOur hope is that this meeting will encourage all of us to think a little differently about photography\, to hear perspectives we may not have considered before\, and to enjoy a lively conversation with fellow photographers.

SUMMARY:On Location: Miramar Air Show
DESCRIPTION:Join Darkroomers for a full day of photography at the Miramar Air Show. This is an all-day event\, but you are welcome to stay for as much or as little of the day as you like. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe air show offers plenty of opportunities to photograph fast-moving aircraft\, aerial demonstrations\, and displays on the ground. For the best chance of filling the frame with aircraft in flight\, bring your longest lens. A 500–600mm lens is ideal\, but don’t let that stop you if you don’t own one. You can rent a longer lens for the day or simply bring the longest lens you have. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: \n\n\n\n\nYour camera and longest telephoto lens\n\n\n\nExtra batteries and memory cards\n\n\n\nWater and sunscreen\n\n\n\nA monopod\, if you have one (tripods are not permitted)\n\n\n\nA blanket for sitting on the pavement\, or a portable chair or stool\n\n\n\nFor a list of acceptable and prohibited items\, click here.\n\n\n\n\nGeneral admission is free\, including the open “blanket” seating areas on the pavement. Reserved grandstand seating is also available for purchase through miramarairshow.com. \n\n\n\nPlan to arrive early. Gates open at 8:00 AM. The Miramar Air Show is a large and busy event\, so it may be difficult for everyone to meet in one place once we are inside. On the day of the event\, please use the Darkroomers Slack channel or text messages to connect with other members who are attending. \n\n\n\nCome prepared for a long day outdoors\, lots of action\, and some rewarding photography opportunities. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit miramarairshow.com.

SUMMARY:September 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will start promptly at 7 pm\, but we’ll open the room at 6:30 pm for setup and social time. \nJoin us for our Monthly Exhibition!\nOur judge for September will be Andrew Hertel. \nMembers bring prints for critique on the third Wednesday of each month. Prints accepted by the Judge will hang for up to 2 months in the Photographic Arts Building gallery. \nVisitors are welcome\, however\, submitting images for critique is available for members only. If you’d like more information about joining Darkroomers\, please check out our membership page and email us if you have any questions. \n\nAbout Andrew\nAndrew Hertel is a fine art photographer specializing in black and white landscapes\, wildlife\, and nature photography. He is drawn to the way light\, shadow\, shape\, and texture come together to define a scene\, creating images that reflect the quiet beauty of the natural world. \nBeyond photography\, Andrew has a deep love for adventure and exploring remote landscapes. Whether on foot\, motorcycle\, or bicycle\, he finds inspiration in the wild places he visits and the ever-changing conditions that shape them. His work has been exhibited at fine art shows and galleries\, and he leads photography workshops in places like Death Valley and Kyrgyzstan\, helping others experience and capture the landscapes in their own way. \nFor Andrew\, photography is more than just creating images—it’s about being out in nature\, embracing the journey\, and sharing that experience with others.
