Our 5th Wednesday meetings are gallery hanging and social meetings. Hob-knob with some of the area’s experts in amateur photography and enjoy delicious Hors d’oeuvres !

So half of your life is spent in the dark of night, but have you really explored the possibilities of night sky photography? You travel half way around the world to iconic places in the northern and southern hemisphere, you click away until sunset and then call it quits for the day. Maybe you get up to catch the sunrise. Think again, maybe you should lose a little sleep and capture some of the most outstanding images of your life. Come explore Earth and sky when the Moon and stars come out and photography techniques you can use between sunset and sunrise.
The workshop will explore the art of night sky photography. You most likely own all the equipment you need, and the software to make multi-image star trails is fun and free. Specific applications and techniques for planning optimal images of Earth objects like mountains, buildings and trees combined with Sun, Moon and stars will be reviewed. A handout will also be provided that covers some of the handy techniques and a pre-shoot checklist to help get you the image you want and keep Murphy at bay. Please note this is not a “hands-on” workshop, but information on planning, tools, and techniques.

Join us for our Quarterly Image Competition.
The Quarterly Image Competition is a special event for Darkroomers. Guests can come and vote on images but only members can submit images. The competition is theme based and the theme is identified at the beginning of the quarter. The meetings are a social event with Hors d’oeuvres and drinks being served. Members and guests can walk around and take in the images and vote on the ones they like.
This Quarter’s theme is ‘Green’ and this will be a special 500px gallery night!

The power of your photography begins with the visual symbolism of the story you are telling. Editing in Photoshop conveys your story to the viewer.
This interactive workshop leads you through that “story-perception” process using examples of classical and contemporary photos, events, portrits, pets, landscapes and car culture.
Shoot For Story
In the “Shoot For Story” half of the workshop we interpret a wide variety of photographs. Image sources include classic, commercial, editorial, and contemporary art photographers. We dig into each image and determine what works – or does not work – in each photograph. We expand on the concept of visual literacy to understand how the subjective elements in the image are conveying a story, and how compelling and interesting the story is to the viewer.
Attendees participate in the interpretation process — this creates a dynamic, fun workshop. Attendees can just attend and passively experience the interpretations, or jump in at any time. This process greatly expands our appreciation for how symbolic elements in an image ignite the imagination of the viewer.
Edit For Perception
In the “Edit For Perception” half of the workshop we discover how to use the nature of human perception to guide our editing choices in Lightroom and Photoshop. We cover some of the skills-based “how” of photo editing, but we focus more on the “why.” We look at the as-photographed image and ask how the image can be re-visualized through editing to convey a more compelling and clear visual message.
